Frances Avery MacFadyen died on November 30, 2024 at the age of 102 in Chilliwack, B.C.. She was a very intelligent, educated, fun-loving woman who was ahead of her time but dedicated her life to her husband of 60 years : D.J.(Jack) MacFadyen (who predeceased her in 2013) and her children: Rod (Teasa), Mary, Margot ( Moe Agagnier) and Mark and was a loving grandmother to Patrick and Stephen. Frances was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the youngest daughter of W.A. and Katie Hagerman. Her siblings, all of whom have predeceased her, were Margaret Mann, Mary Tilden, Edith Hagerman, Kay Hagerman, Marion Tilley, Isobel Gibbings, and Jack Hagerman. She was the Senior Pin of Bedford Road Collegiate in 1940. She was trained as a lab technician and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1943. In subsequent years she taught and practiced lab technique in Afghanistan and at the University.
However, her main work outside the home was as a clubwoman in several organizations, including the Saskatoon Children’s Film Committee, the Saskatoon Boys Band, and the Vancouver General and UBC Hospital Women’s Auxiliary. At various times during her long life she lived in Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Kabul, Afghanistan, Vancouver, and Chilliwack.
She will be sorely missed by her family who wishes to thank her caregiver of many of her final years, Ellen Kattenberg.
