Van Veen Geertjen "Gerda" (nee Zwiers)
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8
In His perfect time, the Lord called unto Himself our beloved wife, mother, oma and great-grandmother, sister/sister-in-law, aunt and friend, Geertjen Van Veen at the age of 74 years on November 16, 2020. She fought a long and courageous battle with leukemia and has now entered into her eternal rest. We cannot express how much we will miss her in our daily lives, but we are so thankful that she is now forever in the presence of her dear Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Geertjen was born on August 30, 1946 in Doesburg, the Netherlands. She was the oldest of 6 children and from an early age was involved in helping to care for and nurture others. She met the love of her life Gerrit, and they were married on October 24, 1968. They were blessed with three children and in 1976 they took their young family and immigrated to Canada to start a new life in Chilliwack.
Geertjen always loved being in the centre of home life and raising her children and homemaking were her biggest priority as her children grew up. She also had a gift for hospitality and all those who knew her can testify of her care and kindness. She was an active and involved member in her church and had a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. She loved flowers and the outdoors and one of her favorite activities was camping. As her children grew and married and had children of their own, family became even more important to her. They were her world and she never missed an opportunity to let them know it. If anyone had a need and she was able to fill it, she was always more than happy to do so. She was diagnosed with leukemia in March of 2019 and fought a long and courageous battle. She endured her illness with patience and grace, always testifying to the hope and confidence of having an eternal home with Jesus. Her eternal hope was certain, but her greatest heartache was the thought of leaving her beloved family. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband Gerrit, and their children Jacquelien and John Wubs (Nathan & Cassidy, Nicole & Jason and their daughter Brooklynn, Kayla & Ben and their daughter Adelaide, Shaylene and Ellianne), Karin and Wes Kooyman (Travis & Taylor, Riley & Emma and their children Kohen and Paisley, Calvin & Ashley) Andrew and Sandra (Brendan, Samantha, Gavin and Aiden) She was predeceased by her parents (Ep & Liena Zwiers) her in-laws (Arie & Krijntje Van Veen), and her sister (Mientje Ostermeier).
