Henry will be sadly missed by cousins and family friends. He was predeceased by Peter and Maria Gerz (parents) and 1 brother.
Henry was born August 13, 1931 in Rosetown, Saskatchewan to parents Peter and Maria Gerz. Peter and Maria both came from South Russia in 1927 and 1929 and married in Saskatchewan February 27, 1930. They had a second boy in 1934, who went to be with the Lord early at 6 months.
The Gerz family moved to Greendale in 1946, just 2 years before the great flood. They weathered the flood and clean-up. Henry continued to help on the farm and eventually got into dump truck driving. He was always very thankful for his loving parents. His mother passed away June 8, 1969 and his father May 4, 1970; Henry was on his own.
He continued working and playing billiards in his basement with Abe Bekart and Jake Franz and other friends. He had coffee and meals on a regular basis with many contacts. Henry had a very detailed business mind as copious notes and many receipts were evident in his home.
He attended and was baptized at First Mennonite Church Greendale. As work took him to different locations, Henry got exposed to investments, some in main stream stocks and others in local and semi-local developments.
My father and Henry shared the same birthday so I got to know Henry just after High School. He also got to know my future mother-in-law. This gave Marti some stability to her life and consistency to her girls. He came to our gatherings with a toothpick handy and a warm smile. His neighbours loved him as a gentle, fair neighbor. Doug Kemp and Henry got to have many discussions about hockey, local and the NHL. Henry love the Canucks and the Leafs and had season tickets to the Canucks for several years with Mr. Edwards.
More recently, he frequented the Airport Café to discuss the latest current affairs. Henry was a generous, kind gentleman and very thankful for his loving parents. As age crept up, Henry had some health issues that started to slow him down.
A Graveside Service will be held at Greendale Cemetery on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at 1:30 pm.
