Herta was born on February 2, 1925, in Wiesendorf, Wohlynien, Russia. She was the seventh child of Gustav and Fredericke Bartz. At six months of age, following the death of her mother, Herta was adopted by her Uncle Edward Bartz and his wife Julianna. Herta's family were farmers and they left everything behind, moving to Michelsburg Ukraine, due to the Communist party's collectivization policy. Unfortunately, Herta's father became ill and died in 1934. In 1936 Herta's mother married Reinhold Busenius, who was later taken, along with many men at the time, and drafted into the army. During World War II, Herta and her mother Julianna, fled to Germany.
After the war, while she was living in Germany, Herta reconnected with her childhood friend Ruben Schimann. Having met again as adults, they were married in June of 1947.
In 1948, Ruben and Herta's first child, Emma, was born. A few years later, in 1952, the family immigrated to Canada. Initially, they lived in Manitoba with Ruben's uncle Sam, until 1953. In that year, Herta's mother was granted permission to join the Schimann family in Canada and they moved to Edmonton, Alberta where Ruben`s cousin lived. In 1957, their second child Walter was born. In the following year, the family moved to Vernon B.C. where Herta lived for 33 years.
In 1991, Herta and Ruben made the difficult decision to leave Vernon and move to Chilliwack BC in order to join both their children and grandchildren. Herta was known for her passion for gardening and her Christmas baking.
In 2005, Herta lost her dear husband Ruben to whom she had been married for 58 years. During the final years of her life, Herta's health began to fail. Yet, her faith in God remained strong.
Herta is survived by her sisters Olga, Ursula, Christal, and Anita, and her brother Gustuv who all reside in Germany. She is also survived by her children Emma and Walter (Cindy), her grandchildren Stan (Carly), Darryl (Rachel), Tanya (Sven), Steffyn (Reshina), Dana (Cory), and Torian and Karrie (Paul) and Chris her great-grandchildren August, Lily, Kate, Genevieve, Tess, James, Liam, Luke, Elena, Julia and Michael.
Although we will miss her greatly, we take comfort in knowing that Herta has finally joined her husband and is now in her heavenly home with her Savior.
