After a courageous year-long battle with brain cancer, Karen McCaughan passed away peacefully on November 7, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Karen was the beloved middle child of Wilfred and Beverly Figgitt. She spent her formative years on the army base at CFB Chilliwack, attending Watson Elementary and graduating from Sardis Secondary School. Her early career began at BC Telephone Company, where she worked as a service representative. Karen met the love of her life, Jim McCaughan, in 1967 on a blind date tobogganing at Manning Park. After four years of courtship, they were married in 1971 at the All Sappers Chapel at CFB Chilliwack. Together, they built a life rooted in love and community – first renting a small home in Chilliwack, then building their family home at Vedder Crossing in 1972. Karen launched a successful career in real estate, earning the respect of her peers and serving as president of the Chilliwack and District Real Estate Board for two years. Karen’s true calling emerged when she became the Children’s Pastor at First Avenue Christian Assembly. Her warmth, creativity, and unwavering faith left a lasting impact on hundreds of children and their families. She was a cherished member of the church leadership team, and a beacon of compassion and joy. As her family grew, Karen embraced her role as matriarch with grace and devotion. With the arrival of ten grandchildren, she stepped away from formal work to dedicate herself fully to her family. Karen gave her time and love freely to her children and grandchildren, whose lives were deeply shaped by her love and support. Her presence was a constant source of love, wisdom, and strength. Karen’s legacy is one of faith, family, and service. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Karen is predeceased by her parents Wilfred and Beverly Figgitt. She is survived by brother Bill (Marilyn), sister Linda, husband Jim, children Kathy (Chad), Kristy (Jeff), Daniel (Pamela), Jillian (Jason), and ten grandchildren. The family would like to express gratitude for the support received by their caregiver Ella, Chilliwack Home Health, Cascade Hospice, and Drs Brooks, Voth, and Epp.
A Celebration of Karen’s life will be held at Yarrow Alliance Church, 42479 Yarrow Central Rd., on November 15th at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cascade Hospice.
