Lois was born June 26th, 1931, at St. Lina, Alberta to Joseph and Lillian Sunderman and was the eldest of 6 Sisters. She grew up on a farm at Fork Lake. She loved horses and was a skilled rider. As the eldest, she was often her Dad’s hunting partner and was known to have a pretty good shot.
Lois married her soulmate, Edward Warawa in 1954 and they had two sons, Bob and Lyle. They first lived in Vancouver, then a military posting took them to Soest, Germany and they finally settled in Chilliwack in 1969.
Prior to marriage, Lois trained as a Practical Nurse. Her first job was in Kamloops and then Jericho in Vancouver. After raising the boys and on their return to Chilliwack she began working at Bradley Center. In her later years she trained as a Recreational Therapist and continued to work at Bradley Center until her retirement in 1991.
Lois was an avid hiker especially throughout the Chilliwack River Valley. She also enjoyed skiing, gardening and golf. She was very proud of her two “holes in one”. She loved animals of all types, and dogs were part of the family throughout the years. Lois had an artistic flair and loved to paint and create. Her beautiful handiwork is treasured by her children end grandchildren. Her culinary skills were exemplary, and her legendary Caesar salad dressing is a closely guarded family secret!
Lois and Ed travelled extensively throughout Europe with their boys while living in Germany. Stories of Lois riding in the trunk in Spain to diagnosis the wheel noise were epic. They also spent many years RVing all over the US. Lois’s adventurous spirit also included travels to India to experience the culture.
Later they spent winters in Hawaii as well as trips to Costa Rica and Mexico. In 2014 they were invited to South Korea to represent the Canadian Military Veterans. Lois always said it was an honour and they were treated like royalty.
Lois was the heart and soul of her family. Her gentle demeanour and ability to listen without judging made her the one everyone turned to. In later years when her memory began to fade, she was fortunate to have her family close. She especially loved visits from the Great Grandchildren and dogs. Her biggest smiles were for them!
Lois was predeceased by her Parents Joe and Lillian Sunderman, Sisters Carol Palkun, Vera Pukal and Dorine Kuzma.
