

Lorraine Mary Toby was born April 17th in Redbrush, BC. She was raised on the land and taught the Chilcotin traditions. After attending St Joseph Mission, she became a mother to 1 daughter and 3 sons. She moved to Bella Coola and raised her children with guidance from the Pootlass family. She returned to Williams Lake, then moved to Vancouver where she passed away. She endured so much trauma, and this life wasn’t kind to her.
She passed away on April 8th, after a long battle with addiction on the streets of Hastings. Throughout her struggles she’s always been helping others, always smiling and kept in touch with family.
She is being honoured and remembered by her longtime partner “Storm” Allan Scheffler, her daughter Shani Hance/Shane Norris her grandkids Dakota, Kyra, Taya, Chaz and Cassie, her son Tyrone Hance/Allyssa Brigham, her grandkids Blayz, Leighton, Danae, her youngest son Arron Alphonse and grandkids Nyla and Kayson. Her children’s father Barry Hance and her best friend Percy Pootlass.
She was predeceased by her Father Mike Toby, her sister Trina King, her brother Brandon Toby, her son Tyson Toby, her granddaughter Helena Rose Norris. Also, her longtime friend Terence Keewatincappo, who died just a week prior to her.
Lorraine was very thoughtful, considerate, and kind natured. She was very artistic; she loved to bead, collect trinkets, music and she loved to cook, bannock was her specialty. She’d open her home to anyone in need. She never passed judgment on anyone and would help anyone without any hesitation. She was known for her storytelling, humour and her outspoken nature. Lorraine was also a rule breaker, she lived wild and free. She was fierce and truly lived her best life to the best she knew how. Her mother Irene called her, “Wild one”.
