Peggy's parents were Archie and Maude (née Plunkett) Smith, an Irish Canadian Prairie family that arrived in BC in the 1920s. Shortly after arriving in BC, Peggy was born, the youngest of 5 surviving children. She received degrees in both Mathematics and General Arts in 1949 from Queen’s University. She returned to Vancouver and married Charles ("Bud") Smith in 1950, a marriage that was to last for 63 years, and had two children. Bud's military career moved them to Fort Churchill (northern Manitoba), Chilliwack, Germany, and Halifax. Peggy particularly enjoyed the adventure of the family's three years in Europe in the late 1960s. Peggy loved travel, and disliked being encumbered by things, so found real happiness and freedom when she and Bud had all their possessions in a trailer, and could move where the spirit took them.
Peggy was predeceased by her parents, siblings, husband (Charles Edward "Bud" Smith, 1926-2013), and one son (Robert Charles "Bob" Smith, 1954-2010). She is survived by a son, Ernie (Pictou County, Nova Scotia), four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Peggy was a fiercely independent woman, who guarded her strength, capacity and independence well into her 90s. Peggy only recently moved into Eden care home, receiving excellent care in her final months.
