I woke up this morning with the strongest urge to search one more time for Pat and Karen, two people who I have looked for many times over the years hoping that one day I might find a way to contact them so I could say thank you. I am so saddened that this memorial is what I stumbled across but the words I have for him are still true so I want to share them here. You were the best family I ever lived with and the only one in which I felt truly loved. You taught me how to have fun together, a love of chess, a longing to see Ireland. You taught me what grace and forgiveness looks like and how to show up for the people I love. All my best childhood memories are because of you and I truly believe it is your example of family that I based my own family on. So thank you for your love, care and empathy over the years. I only wish I had the opportunity to tell you in person how much of an influence you had in my life.

Karen, Nick, Joe and family. My thoughts are with you in this time of loss. Pat was my teacher and mentor in the 70's at Central and I had the honour of working with him during the 90's and 2000's. He was a friend and a great role model and I am forever enriched by the times that he and I talked and laughed together. He will be greatly missed.

Pat was a colleague at Burnaby Central when I was a teacher and ten years later as his principal. 
He was an outstanding, knowledgeable, empathetic teacher who influenced so many young people in his career. He had such a kind heart and also a wonderful sense of humour. 
We have lost a fantastic person.
