Peter Hamm was born in Schoendorf, Ukraine on August 13, 1921 to parents, Abram and Suzanna. He passed away on Sunday, June 12 at the Cascade Lodge, Chilliwack at the age of 94. Peter grew up in Gem, Alberta and was baptized at 18 and joined the Gem Mennonite Brethren Church. In 1950 he married Katie (Schartner) and moved to Black Creek, B.C. where he owned a construction company. In Black Creek, Peter and Katie raised their family of seven children. Peter was a valued and active Church member and was very involved with Gideons International. In 1992, after Katie’s death, he married Helen (Esau) Wiebe and together they served with MCC and Gideons in Chilliwack. Peter’s joys included his family, travel and God’s precious creation. His greatest concern in life has always been that all of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren would know personally the saving grace of Jesus Christ.
Peter is predeceased by his first wife and mother of his children, Katie, and two grandchildren, Katrina Wahl and Anthony Bargen. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 24 years, Helen; his sisters Helen Doerksen and Anne Foster; children: Elvera (Wayne) Penner, Ron (Judy) Hamm, Loraine (Russ) Wahl, Myrna (John) Loewen, Henry (Irene) Hamm, Heidi (Ken) Franz and Caroline Hamm, 22 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and Helen’s children: Dan (Jennifer) Wiebe, Dave (Deleen) Wiebe, Marilyn Wiebe, Pauline (Mario) Alleckna, 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Viewing will be held at Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home, 45865 Hocking Ave, Chilliwack on Friday, June 17 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Celebration of Life for Peter will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 18 at Central Community Church, 46100 Chilliwack Central Road.
