OBITUARY

Peter Fairbanks O'Byrne

April 13, 1953December 28, 2020

Peter Fairbanks O’Byrne peacefully passed away Monday afternoon, December 28th 2020 in his family home after a battle with melanoma. Peter was called to heaven just three weeks after the loss of his beloved wife, Helena Elizabeth O’Byrne.

Peter O’Byrne was a much loved and brave son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Peter was born to Cecil and Pearl O’Byrne at Grey Nuns Hospital in Regina, Saskatchewan. He was a twin to Paul O’Byrne, with two elder brothers, Glenn O’Byrne and Brian O’Byrne.

Peter's primary education differed from his siblings in that he attended Campion College, a school run by Jesuit Priests. Following graduation in 1971, Peter worked for Hudson Bay Northern Stores as a clerk in Alberta’s northern communities of Atikameg and Fort Chipewyan. Peter then attended the University of Regina, the Kelsey Institute of Saskatchewan, and BCIT.

As an adult Peter rededicated his life to Jesus and was re-baptized. Peter & Helena built a family home on an acreage in Rosedale, B.C. They raised three children throughout a 42 year marriage. Peter was a part of the community and made life-long friendships through church and bible studies.

Peter enjoyed a long career with the City of Chilliwack, mainly in the Engineering Department. Over the years Peter developed many hobbies, in particular he enjoyed sailing and gardening. Peter provided for and protected his family.

Peter is predeceased by his Father & Mother, Cecil & Pearl O’Byrne, and his eldest brother, Glenn O’Byrne, and his wife Helena Elizabeth O’Byrne (Schmidt).

Peter is lovingly remembered by his brothers, Brian O’Byrne & Paul O’Byrne, his children and their families: Stefan Arthur O’Byrne, Ian Matthew O’Byrne (wife, Janessa Ruth O’Byrne (Lepp) and their sons William Richard O’Byrne, Edwin Peter O’Byrne), and his daughter, Shannon Elaine McDougall (O’Byrne) (husband, Matthew Marcel McDougall and their daughters, Kinley Helena McDougall and Carlyn Eva-Marie McDougall).

When I first started working at the City in 2007 Peter was always willing to lend a helping hand and share his wealth of knowledge gained during his years of service in Chilliwack. In the same way that he is missed here at the City I know that his family and friends must too be mourning their loss. Take comfort in knowing that he is now free from pain and living with his Savior.

Peter and I were grade school friends. We didn't see each other as much during high school years, but reconnected during university/tech days in Saskatoon which included involvement at Faith Baptist Church. Not recently, but through the years we visited Peter and Helen a few times in B.C. , including a time when they took us out on the sailboat. Peter was a very 'energetic and engaged' person...be it his relationship with Helen, his family, his work, his sailing, his friends, and most importantly, God. It was a blessing to visit with him via phone a couple of weeks before his passing. Sorry to hear of his passing. Our condolences to all those in his family, not only on his passing, but also that of Helen's. Thankful for a faith that speaks of the resurrection of the dead and a dynamic future! - Harry Strauss

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Peter and Helena. Peter was a childhood friend of my husband’s. I met Peter in Saskatoon when he was attending Kelsey institute. We visited Helen andPeter a few times in BC. I enjoyed Peter’s friendly teasing and his laughter. He was a dedicated man in family, friendships, work and recreational pursuits. I am thankful for a meaningful telephone visit a short time before he died.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Judy.

I was privileged to work alongside Peter at the City and will keep many memories of our chats over our shared office wall. He was a wealth of knowledge and Chilliwack was lucky to have him contributing to help shape the our city over his career. We’re all at a loss for his passing. My best to the family.

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Peter and his wife Helena. I worked with Peter for many years at the City of Chilliwack in the Land Development Department. My favorite memories of Peter are when we would discuss politics. I always learned something new and many chuckles were had. Peter was always helpful and his knowledge of his field of work was to be admired. I wish to convey my condolences to Peter's family. May you be filled with peace during this most difficult time.

I would like to send my sincere condolences to Peter 's (and Helena's) family. I met Peter through work in 2015. Peter had so much knowledge which he enjoyed sharing. He always made time for me to explain and answer my many questions. Peter was kind and considerate; it was always so nice to see him smile and hear his laugh.
