It is with great sadness that the family of Tariq Kennith Hughes announces his passing.
Tariq was born in Abbotsford in June of 1999, and moved to Chilliwack when he was 7.
He was 16 at the time of his death. Tariq was a very compassionate young man who
struggled with mental illness and depression, who passed away in April 2016 in the
mountains he hiked and explored for most of his life.
Tariq is survived by his loving parents, Alan and Wendy Hughes; his siblings, Alicia,
Tysen and Alexis; great grandmothers, Herta Schmitt and Leona Geortz; grandparents
Louise and Dick Hiebert, Shirley and Ed Dever, and Alan Hughes; aunts and uncles,
Leslie and Matt Suderman, Patrick Hughes, Shannon Hughes, Christine and Brice
Babuik; cousins Sparrow and Glade, Mahalia, Zachary, Joseph and Hannah, Cloie and
Jaxson; and a large extended family. He is predeceased by his grandfather, Kenneth
Braun.
Tariq was in the 11th grade at GW Graham High School when he passed away. He
excelled as a hockey player for nine years and helped his team win the Midget Elite Cup
Championship this past March. He loved hiking, swimming, camping, fishing and all
things outdoors. He had a deep love for his dogs, Scruffy and then later Fiona. Tariq
always cared for his siblings. He was patient with children, and demonstrated this by
teaching many children to ride a bike. He had an incredible work ethic, and loved his
jobs at the Harvest Cafe, and as a landscaper in the summer. Tariq loved listening to
music, shopping and spending time with friends.
Tariq will always be remembered for his courage and determination in tough times, his
kind and caring nature and his incredible sense of humour. Tariq was loved by many
and will be missed by all.
