To The Martin Family,

I was sad to discover last evening that your husband, father and grandfather passed away four years ago.   Nevertheless, I just want to let all of you know that he saved my life as well as those of our twin boys, Andrew & Allan, who were born at 7:56pm & 8:03pm, respectively, on July 24, 1970 at the Grace Maternity Hospital in Halifax.  That morning, unbeknownst to hospital staff, I had developed pulmonary embolisms in both lungs.  I was suffocating for air.  Finally around 5pm, my husband demanded that Dr. Tom should be called as my husband knew there was something terribly wrong.  If I’m remembering correctly,  he lived on the St. Margaret’s Bay Rd, and his car must have flown at low altitude to arrive at my bedside. Lol.  I can still see him racing into my room and, in a commanding voice, said:  “Get her to X-ray”!   One look at me, and immediately, he knew what was wrong.  The rest is history.....I had a long recovery, of which Dr. Tom watched over me with all the tenderness and expertise that he had within him.  This past week, our paternal twin boys turned 50 years old who are healthy and have grown into two wonderful men.  The three of us are alive today because of your husband, father and grandfather.....and I’m glad he survived the drive to reach the age of 81 years 😁.  THANK YOU, DR. TOM.

I have just learned of the passing of Dr. Martin so this message is very belated. I wanted to send it nevertheless.  I was a young dietitian at the Grace in the 70s ( and beyond) when Dr Martin was there.  Most of my working relationship with him was with women with diabetes, gestational and Type 1. He developed a diet idea for pregnant patients with Type 1 diabetes and it was referred to as the 1/7,2/7,3/7,1/7, indicating the distribution of calories over breakfast, lunch, dinner and night lunch. I have very fond memories of a brilliant, compassionate (and teasing!) man.  We all loved him. Very sorry for your loss.

So sorry to hear of the sad passing of cousin Tom. I was born Jan 1949 in Liverpool so I never met Tom as far as I know, but through his Mum Mary & dad George my parents Charlie & Anne were aware of the wonderful work Tom was doing in Canada. In recent years my son Steven whilst investigating our family tree was I believe in touch with Tom and the family so at long last you all became just more than just old photographs. I have lived in St Helens (just outside Liverpool) since 1973 but Liverpool is where my dad Charlie met and Married my mother Anne in 1948 so you may have a better idea of who I am. As a family we send you our love and our sorrow at the loss of Tom who was by all accounts a wonderful man - Mary Bryan (nee Martin)

A man who stood up for what he believed in. Moral, dignified and relentless in his pursuits. He had an impact on many people and will never be forgotten. In a world of compromise he was the one who always knew the right thing to do and never wavered. A terrible loss.

Though I never had the opportunity to meet Dr. Tom, after reading his obit, I really wish I had the opportunity to get to know him.  He sounds like a wonderful man and I know he will be missed.  My love and sympathy goes to his wife, and all of his children and grandchildren.
