A Memorial will take place at a later date.
Verneal was born in Camrose, Alberta on June 12, 1939, to parents Nels and Sofia Grue. Verneal was third of four girls (Jean, Grace, Verneal and Lillian). She was raised with her sisters on the family farm in Armena, Alberta.
Verneal met Don Kallevig at Camrose College when she was 16 and Don 17. Their budding romance would pause while Verneal entered Bible College in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Her deep love for music inspired her to join the college choir. They toured and performed in Lyndon, Washington. Don attended the performance (to see Verneal of course). Their relationship bloomed. They married in Camrose on June 30, 1961 and settled in New Westminster. Verneal worked at BC TEL until starting their family.
While lovingly creating a family home, Verneal was involved in church activities including many choirs.
For several years she led the Burrard Inlet Bible Institute Choir in Port Moody, BC.
North Delta was home for about 37 years where she and Don raised Sonja and David. Once they were in school, Verneal began to work part time as a switchboard operator at Eaton’s, Guildford. Eventually, this led to a sales position in the furniture department. She enjoyed a long and wonderful furniture sales career until Eaton’s closed and completed her working career at K&D Furniture.
Verneal thoroughly enjoyed entertaining family and friends, the home was filled with love, laughter and many wonderful memories.
She loved taking her family to visit her parents on the family farm in Armena each summer for many years, enjoying the drive through the Rockies along the way. We would often meet up with one or more of her sisters with their families and enjoyed many reunions on the farm.
In 2005, Don and Verneal relocated to Chilliwack B.C. There, they were fortunately able to spend a lot of time watching their grandchildren grow. They met many new friends and again, with her love for music, she was involved with several local choirs.
Several visits to Norway to see family, learning about her roots, were one of many highlights throughout her life. She was immensely proud of her Norwegian heritage. She loved the Lord with all her heart and soul, living out her faith until her very last breath. Her deep love for family and friends reached far and wide. Verneal’s kindness, genuineness, honesty, loyalty, and class is unequalled and will be missed by all. Although we will miss her every day, we know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. What a beautiful hope!
The family welcomes donations to Union Gospel Mission in Vancouver, BC as an expression of sympathy instead of flowers.
