OBITUARY

William Ronald Mooney

November 24, 1924September 15, 2019

“They that go down to the sea in ships….These see the works of the Lord” Psalm 107:23-24, KJV

Born November 1924 at the family homestead of Elm Glen in Inverness, PQ, Bill was the fifth of eight children born to George Reginald and Mabel (Jamieson) Mooney. With the outbreak of World War Two Bill served his country in the Royal Canadian Navy; as a radar operator on HMCS Long Branch, an escort corvette on the North Atlantic. Following the war Bill married Grace Viola Learmonth, who he had known from childhood, and they boarded the westbound train to farm in Langley, BC. In 1954 Bill lost a kidney to TB; and moved his young family to Chilliwack during his recuperation.

Predeceased by parents George R. and Mabel Mooney, brothers Douglas, Malcolm (Mac) and John, and sisters Dorothy (Dot) Mooney and Doreen Whipple, in-laws Iris, Dave and Norma and son-in-law, Jack Chupa. Survived by siblings M.M. (Bud) Mooney and Grace E.M. Mooney, sisters-in-law Barb and Peggy Mooney. Survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Grace (Learmonth), children Sherry Chupa, Faye Minter (Brian) and Art Mooney (Chila). Bill is survived by three generations of direct descendants; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Over the years Bill wore many hats but his life-long passions were building and renovating homes, building rock walls, and travelling throughout the province. Bill and Grace spent several years in Harrison Hot Springs, where Bill renovated and built several homes. Harrison Hot Springs will always hold a special place in their hearts.

Bill passed away peacefully on Sunday in the same manner he had lived: quietly, with dignity, surrounded by the love of the family he had devoted his life to – with Grace by his side, holding his hand. Remembered always with respect and gratitude – he has gone on to a house of many mansions –so rest easy now, you’ve earned it.

With special thanks to Drs. Scott Markey and Andreas Wolff, to the teams at the Birchwood and at The Waverly. The family will be forever grateful for your compassionate and exemplary care of Bill.

There will be no service as per Bill’s wishes.
