Helen Craig was born Helen Louise Bost on March 23, 1926, to Holland and Grace Bost. If that sounds like a long time ago, that's because it was. Cars were just becoming common in rural America; TVs were not yet in any homes. There were no electric refrigerators, no interstates, not even sliced bread. Helen would tell you, if you asked, what it was like to watch the world grow and change.
She would tell you of what it was like to grow up on a large several hundred-acre farm. She would tell you of the life she lived with her 12 brothers and sisters, and the simple things they would do for fun. She could describe to you hard work, and simple luxuries, from a time where everything was used, sometimes used again, and nothing was wasted.
Later in life she would meet and marry John Hoyle Craig. They were blessed with 3 daughters, Linda, Renee, and Marilyn. Their 53 years of marriage was filled with the wholesome joys of gardening, the occasional meal at a local restaurant, and lazy summer afternoons in a rocking chair on the porch. Together were many holidays and Christmases with 7 grandchildren: Randall, Chad, Erika, Melissa, Aaron, Travis, and Hollin. She watched as that turned into great-grandchildren: Holden, Madison, Luke, Trevor, Olivia, Marissa, Audrina, Aubrey, Ava, Jace, Violet, Cannon, and Roman. Her family was even blessed to see her hold 7 great-great grandchildren: Brenton, Hadley, Haven, Hank, Hallie, Easton, and Harrison. Through many seasons of life, she never gave up the rocking chair on the porch, and she became a bit of a local celebrity known for waving at all the neighbors as they passed by.
She loved visits from her grandchildren of any and all generations. And she would tell you that you were her favorite if you stopped by with a box of chocolate covered cherries. If you wanted advice, there was always one central theme: Try not to worry, try not to get upset over small things, in the end it will be whatever it will be. Maybe that's the secret to living to 100.
When she wasn't at home enjoying the gifts that only come from a life away from the busy city, she was at Church. She was a lifelong member of St Enoch Lutheran Church, and the longest continuous member. The place where she went to church as a girl, the place where she was married, and the place where she saw all 3 of her daughters be wed. There's no doubt in anyone's mind that knew her that she's in heaven now, and reunited with Hoyle, and her many brothers, sisters and friends that went before her. She had no doubts about being ready when her time came, and that she would be happy to see them all again. She would joke about how she always wanted to be an angel in the Christmas pageant, but it never worked out that way. I'm sure she's laughing now about how she finally got her wings.
