James (Jim) L. Solomon passed in peace on June 16th, 2018, at the age of 78. Soon thereafter it was learned that Heaven appreciated the success of China Grove Youth Baseball and Softball under Jim’s 35+ years as Commissioner and decided to call in a professional. Commissioner Solomon embraced his new opportunity but worried their hotdogs would not be as good!
Jim was born March 28th, 1940 to Clyburn and Mable Solomon.
Jim is survived by his bride of 54 years and scorekeeper companion for almost as long, Tamara Solomon. Jim’s legacy continues in his only son, Darren Solomon, and his two grandchildren, Ethan Solomon and Eliza Solomon.
Jim not only lived, he led. His many accomplishments include being a veteran of the United States Army, a small business owner, and a volunteer firefighter with Bostian Heights Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years, 10 of those also as the President.
His deepest passion was for China Grove youth baseball. Starting as a team sponsor then becoming Commissioner for over 35 years because he was “last to the selection meeting,” Jim’s presence was tireless and guiding. During his tenure, China Grove Youth Baseball and Softball added 3 fields, became one of the most successful leagues in the area and kept the activity affordable for the community as generations passed through the sport. Jim and his many loyal assistants took immense pride in bringing a positive environment to thousands of young boys, girls and nervous parents. Jim could often be found pacifying parents, settling coaching disputes and offering encouragement from his golf cart often with a Civitan hotdog was in hand.
In addition, Jim had numerous other loves including his Jeep, the UNC Tarheels, Ocean Isle Beach, and watching the world pass from his front porch rocking chair. Jim was a soft spoken, gentle giant who possessed a dry sense of humor that would make an Englishman clap. He was kind and generous but would not tolerate a bully or a fraud.
In lieu of flowers, Jim preferred donations be made to:
