Born in Rowan County on March 28, 1929, he was the son of the late John R. Wensil and Minnie Patterson Wensil.
In addition to his parents, Ray was also preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Gladys Fay Hilton Wensil, who passed away on February 7, 2013.
Ray was one of thirteen children, and the last surviving member. His brothers Amos Wensil, Jay Wensil, Tom Wensil, Sidney Wensil, Vance “Dude” Wensil, Joe Wensil and Bud Wensil; and his sisters, Naomi Wensil, Margaret Wensil Drye, Nell Wensil Anderson, Della “Dot” Wensil and Belle Wensil all preceded him.
He was a faithful member of Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church and retired from Cannon Mills after 48 years of service.
Ray loved his family dearly. He will be remembered for his exceptional character that he instilled in those that knew him best. He loved to hunt and garden and he enjoyed woodworking. He spent time making walking canes and giving them to people who needed them. He enjoyed visiting those in nursing homes and shut-ins.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter and son-in-law, Sheliah and Roy Stowe; grandsons, Chris Stowe and Chad Stowe and his wife, Christy; and two great-grandchildren, Noah Stowe and Lainey Stowe.
The family will receive friends Saturday, December 23, 2023 from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM at Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church.
