Ricky Thomas “Rick“ Abernethy, 57, of Salisbury, went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 20, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his family and special friends following a courageous battle of colon cancer for three and one half years.
Born on August 25, 1955, he was the son of Billie Menscer Abernethy and Arnold Franklin Abernethy, of Salisbury.
Educated in Rowan County schools, he was a graduate of East Rowan High School, class of 1973. He more recently owned and operated Rick’s Unlimited, Inc. for fifteen years. Rick enjoyed motorcycling and was a FAA licensed pilot and aircraft owner.
Rick was a member of Central Baptist Church, Kannapolis, where he remained faithful until his declining health.
Including his parents, those left to cherish his memories include his wife of twenty-seven years, Vickie Benfield Abernethy; sons Jonathan and Paul, both of the home; brothers Tim Abernethy (Peggy), Don Abernethy (Ann), Frank Abernethy (Judy); brothers-in-law, Reid Benfield (Mary), Burton “Burt” Benfield (Carolyn), Mike Benfield (Sandra); all of Salisbury; uncle, Armond Menscer (Bobbie) of Fayetteville; aunt Lucille Rayson of China Grove; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6:30-8:30 PM Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at Central Baptist Church, 1810 Moose Road, Kannapolis, NC; and at other times, the family will be at the home of his parents, Arnold and Billie Abernethy.
Service: 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Central Baptist Church. The Rev. Curtis Parker and the Rev. Allen Reid will officiate. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.
