Born on June 30, 1938, in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Charles Julian Bass and Beatrice Shoe Barringer.
Ruth was a graduate of Concord High School and went on to further her education at Evans Business College, Nancy Taylor Charm & Modeling School, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, and Catawba College.
Prior to becoming a licensed local pastor in the United Methodist Church, Ruth was deeply involved in the life of Landis First United Methodist Church. She served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, sang in the church choir, and held several leadership roles, including president of the United Methodist Women.
She later answered the call to ministry and served as the pastor of Elmwood United Methodist Church in Statesville, North Carolina, for 14 years.
In addition to her ministry and teaching career at Enochville Elementary School, Ruth was active in her community as a member of the China Grove–Landis Pilot Club and the Landis Fire Auxiliary.
Even after her pastoral visits became physically difficult, Ruth’s heart for people never faded. She transitioned to sending handwritten notes, cards, small drawings, and thoughtful pictures—or picking up the phone to call—just to stay connected, encourage others, and make sure everyone was doing well. Her gentle presence and sincere care continued to bless many, even from a distance.
Ruth had a creative spirit and a curious mind. She was very artistic and loved to paint and draw—often turning everyday objects into canvases for her imagination. She was also an avid reader and could often be found joyfully consuming books, always eager to learn, reflect, and grow.
Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Dorsia A. Atkinson, Sr., and her brother, Charles Bass of Florence, South Carolina.
She is survived by her loving sons, Dorsia A. Atkinson Jr. (Jodi) of Sylvania, Georgia, and Charles H. Atkinson (Angela) of Landis, North Carolina; her brother Gene Barringer (Barbara) of Melbourne, Florida; her sister-in-law, Judy A. Turner (Frank) of Statesville, North Carolina; and her niece, Gina How.
