

Born in Comer, GA on July 29, 1931, he was the son of the late Alco and Cora Belle Smith. In addition to his parents, Walter was also preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Delma Goodman Smith, who passed away on October 8, 2017; his brothers, Henry Smith, Jack Smith and Luther Smith; and his sisters, Pauline Everson, Glennie Spry, Ruth Bowlin and Beulah Gibson.
Walter retired from Cannon Mills after 40 years of service. He held many positions during his time in the mill. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
In his earlier years, Walter loved fishing, rabbit hunting and gardening.
Walter and Delma raised a niece from her side of the family, Marie Annette Hampton, whom he cherished spending time with and her children, Larissa Hampton, Trevon Hampton and James Hampton.
He often spoke of his nephews Steve Smith and Randy Bowling, as well as other nephews and nieces.
Scott (Toni) Goodman, Walter’s great-nephew, cared for him for over 15 years. Scott will always cherish all the talks and stories that Walter shared with him.
A public visitation will be held Monday, April 27, 2026, from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
The funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM with Pastor Mark Ryman and Pastor Brian Lord officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
