Joseph Anthony Holay (87) b. January 5, 1934 d. December 21, 2021 Joseph “Joe” Anthony Holay, was born in Los Angeles on January 5, 1934, the only child of Joseph Holay and Josephine Jennie Hilbert . Joe's parents immigrated from Czechoslovakia in 1912. Joe's father served in the US Navy Submarine service during WW I. His mother was a home maker. Joseph graduated from St. Agnes High School (Los Angeles) in 1952. He proudly attended his 50th reunion in 2002. St Agnes High School opened in 1916 but closed in 1953 the year after Joe graduated. The St Agnes parish primary school continues to this day. Joe was married to Alma Stella Mora in 1962 at the St Vincent de Paul Church in Los Angeles. He was a devoted husband to her for 53 years until her death in 2015. They had no children. Joe worked as a courier throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties. He delivered everything from contracts for signatures on a rush basis, to letters, and film reels to the movie industry and even cakes to anything else that you wanted delivered within 24 hours. Joe had an amazing servant’s heart. He took care of his mother Josephine until her death at age 94 in 1988, his mother-in-law Mercedes until her death at age 93 in 1997 and finally his ailing wife Alma until her death at age 89 in 2015. His father, Joseph Holay, predeceased Joe in 1963. Joe loved model trains and passed them on to his young nephews to enjoy. He also loved orange jello carrot salad, In ‘n Out burgers and lots of ice cream. Joe was a faithful member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in North Hollywood for more than 40 years, where he served as an usher during Saturday night services. He moved to Chino in 2017 and quickly joined St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic Church. Joe said that he liked St Patrick's and was sorry to leave it, but he loved St Margaret Mary's Church and quickly felt at home. Covid restrictions made him sad not to attend regularly for an extended time, but he was a faithful, and regular giver. Joe’s generous spirit staunchly supported his church, the Salvation Army and St. Vincent Meals on Wheels for the elderly and homebound. Joe peacefully passed this life on December 21, 2021 at the Pacifica Assisted Living Residence in Chino. His beautiful life will forever be cherished by his nephews and nieces, Ron & Mary Whitten, James & Mary Whitten, Roberta & Bill Martin and Ryan Whitten, as well as 20 grand/great-grand nephews and nieces. He was always a fun part of family gatherings and will be dearly missed.
