Archer Joseph Coleman was a kind-hearted man of compassion and understanding. Known to friends and family as a kind and hardworking individual, his charm and conscientious nature shone through in everything he accomplished. A natural mentor and teacher, Archer had an incredible ability to bring out the best in those around him.
Born on April 18, 1948, in Shreveport, Louisiana to Edward and Maryanne Coleman, Archer exhibited confidence, honesty, and a perceptive nature from an early age. He grew up with his two older brothers, Eric and Bill, and developed a love for fishing with his father and siblings. Saturday mornings on Cross Lake became cherished family traditions, where he would often be the last to leave, determined to catch just one more fish.
In his teenage years, Archer’s even-tempered nature made him a calming presence in his family. When his family relocated to New Orleans before his freshman year, he quickly adapted to his new surroundings, making friends with ease. He discovered a passion for the culinary arts and graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in 1966. He went on to attend the New Orleans Culinary Institute, where he honed his craft and gravitated especially toward Cajun cuisine, honoring his Southern culture. His signature dish, "Mardi Gras Pasta", became a beloved staple among friends and family.
Archer’s natural sociability and charisma made him an exceptional friend. While in culinary school, he met his best friend, Jackson Stone, who not only shared his passion for cooking but also reintroduced him to fishing after the passing of his father. Their friendship endured throughout the years, with Jackson even standing as one of Archer’s best men at his wedding.
In the early 70s, Archer met future wife and love of his life, Loretta Thornton. Their shared dreams of owning a restaurant became a reality when they married in 1975 at the French Quarter Wedding Chapel. Together, they built a thriving business, opening 'Loretta’s on the Bayou' in 1980. Archer led the kitchen with skill and dedication, while Loretta became the heart of the restaurant’s hospitality. Their combined efforts earned the restaurant two Michelin stars and a beloved place in the community. The couple’s children worked alongside them as well, learning the values of hard work, dedication, and family.
A devoted father, Archer instilled these core values in his four children: Homer, Devon, Marie, and Eloise. He adored his two granddaughters, Melrose and Vienna, and found great joy in sharing stories of the restaurant with them. His kind and patient nature allowed him to forge heartfelt relationships with his kids and grandkids, making him a beloved figure in their lives.
Despite the demands of running a successful restaurant, Archer always made time for his passions. Fishing remained a lifelong hobby, and he won the Louisiana Fly Fishing State Championship twice! He also took pride in his faith, serving as a deacon at First Baptist Church Metairie after his retirement from the restaurant. His devotion to his community and congregation was a testament to his humble and faithful spirit.
While his career limited his ability to travel, Archer cherished the trips he did take, especially those to Biloxi, Mississippi, where he visited extended family. In retirement, he and Loretta passed the restaurant down to their eldest son, Homer, and embraced a more relaxed lifestyle. Their home became a hub for family gatherings, cookouts, and their now-annual crawfish boil, which also served as a family reunion.
Archer went to be with the Lord on May 2, 2020, at Tulane Medical Center. He is survived by his loving wife, Loretta, their four children, and two grandchildren. He was laid to rest in Lafayette Cemetery in New Orleans.
Throughout his life, Archer was a generous, imaginative, and kind-hearted man who left behind a legacy of deep friendships, incredible cuisine, and treasured memories. His impact on those who knew him was immeasurable, and he will be remembered fondly by all whose lives he touched.
