James Nichols, age 75, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025. A lifelong seeker of beauty and adventure, James found his deepest joy where the ocean met the horizon — with a surfboard under his arm, a camera in hand, and good friends by his side.
Born on July 22, 1949, James grew up with a love for the sea that never left him. He was a fixture on the beach well into his seventies, catching waves at sunrise and staying to photograph the sun as it dipped below the water. Through his lens, he captured the quiet poetry of nature and the vibrant energy of the people around him. His photos — warm, candid, and full of life — became a way for others to see the world through his eyes.
James had a gift for bringing people together. Whether it was a spontaneous bonfire gathering or a shared sunset watch, he made space for connection and laughter. Friends describe him as a calming presence, always ready with a story, a smile, or a perfectly timed snapshot.
He is survived by his daughter, Claire Nichols, and her husband Marco; his twin sons, Luke and Evan Nichols; his sister, Joanna Fields; and his beloved grandchildren, Sienna, Milo, and Jonah. He also leaves behind his longtime friend and surfing buddy, Rick Torres, and a community of friends who were like family.
A celebration of James's life will be held at the beach he called home. Attendees are encouraged to bring a photo, a story, or simply their bare feet in the sand.
