

George Houston Mateer, 82, of Circleville, Ohio passed away on August 2, 2023 surrounded by his family. He was born on December 7, 1940 in Huntington, WV to George Harvey and Christine (Hall) Mateer. He graduated from Effingham High School in Illinois and went on to serve in the U.S. Army where he met his wife, Karen, at Fort Riley, Kansas, “Home of the Big Red One”. He began his career with the G.C. Murphy Company in 1963 and remained there for decades. He later worked at the Circleville Herald in advertising, and after retiring he worked at McDonalds part-time in the mornings. All of this while mowing lawns here in Circleville for some 30 years.
He was an avid gardener, outdoorsman, a member of the YMCA for 40 plus years where he enjoyed playing basketball. He also enjoyed hiking the hills of Tennessee while searching for old steam engine switchbacks. He and Karen snow-birded for 10 years in Zephyrhills, Florida during their retirement.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife Karen.
Left to mourn his passing are his children Terry (Vicky) Mateer, Kimberly Ann Hall (William) Peters, and Sharon Lynn Hall (Randy) Medley. Also left to mourn are his grandchildren Christopher Peters, Jessica Mateer, Steven Peters, Justin Mateer, Elizabeth Ann Hall (Tyler) Smith; and sister Beth (Don) Burton.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 6th at Defenbaugh-Wise-Schoedinger Funeral home, located at 151 East Main Street Circleville, from 2 to 5pm. His funeral service will be held on Monday, August 7th at Noon with Pastor William Pellum officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery.
