Alpha (Al) Derald Winsett, after living a full life to the age of 93, passed away peacefully to be with his Heavenly Father while surrounded by his family, who he loved dearly. He is at peace now with a much deserved rest after living a vigorously active life. He was an eternal soul and will live on in the hearts of his family. Al was born in Muhlenberg County, KY, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, mostly stationed in the Aleutian Islands. He married Alma Blake in 1949 and they lived most of their married years in Hopkinsville, KY. He worked for 30 years as a mailman for the U.S. Postal Service, while also maintaining a cattle farm in his spare time. After retiring he moved to Clayton, NC, in 1992 to be near his son. Al loved to farm, hunt, fish, garden, and almost anything outdoors. He hunted and fished all over Christian County, KY, with his beloved friend “Possum” Simpson. He was known as the “Ridge Runner” and could remain afield from dawn to dusk. He also fished nearly every body of water in the area including Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. He was one of the last of a dying breed in life, as he was nearly self sufficient. He repaired his own cars, maintained his home, and grew most of his own food. He loved meeting people and making new friends, and never met a stranger. He was also an active member of The Independent Order of Odd Fellows while living in Kentucky. In his retirement his favorite activity was to fish with his son and daughter-in-law and spent all hunting season with his son. He was preceded in death by his parents Harley and Johnnie Ray Winsett as well as his two brothers David and Daniel Winsett. Survivors include his loving wife Alma of 67 years, his son Darrell and daughter-in-law Brenda, and three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 pm Wednesday in the Chapel of McLaurin Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Beasley officiating. Burial will follow on Friday at 1:00 pm at Glenwood Cemetery in Elkton, KY. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, one hour prior to the service from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm at the funeral home and also on Friday one hour prior to the service at Latham Funeral Home in Elkton, KY.
