Clayton: Following a short bout with pneumonia, Arthur Cameron Mercer, Sr., age 94, transitioned to Heaven on Saturday, April 4, 2015.
Funeral Services will be held 3:30 PM Wednesday, April 8, 2015 in the chapel of McLaurin Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. Steve L. Roy officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery with military honors.
Cameron entered this world March 24, 1921 in Bolivia, NC. He grew up and was educated in Brunswick County. During the depression, he was a member of the Civil Conservation Corp near White Lake and Clayton, NC. Cameron met the love of his life, Lena Price Mercer in Clayton. During WWII, Cameron served as a sergeant in the US Army and was attached to Patton’s army as they fought through Europe. After the war, Cameron and Lena lived in numerous places including Bolivia, Wilmington, and Clayton. Cameron was an accomplished carpenter, salesman, machinist, and textile superintendant. Cameron loved Hocutt Memorial Baptist church where he served as deacon and Sunday School teacher. After retirement Cameron served two terms as Clayton Town Councilman. Today Cameron is sitting by a heavenly Maggie Valley like stream reminiscing about wonderful family times.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret E. Mercer and Miles F. Mercer, Sr.; sisters, Thelma M. Gregory, Ruth M. Mann and Marguerite Mercer; brothers, Miles F. Mercer, Jr. and Donald J. Mercer; grandson, Arthur Cameron Mercer, III; and son-in-law, Allen L. Stewart.
In addition to his wife of 74 years, he is survived by children; Art Mercer and wife Joy, Mike Mercer and Sandra Stewart; granddaughters, Angela M. Henderson (Patrick), Kristen M. Johnson (Mark) and Sherri S. Garver; grandson, Ricky Stewart (Leighann); great granddaughters, April Kelley, Christa Mercer, Alivia, Avery, Aleah and Ardyn Johnson and Kayleigh Barbour; great grandsons, Colt Kelley, Matthew Garver, Terri, Dustin, Justin and Dakota Stewart; and great great granddaughter, Lacie Wall.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at the funeral home prior to the service.
