Charlene was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Phillip and Gizella (Dornstauder) Rebholz. She moved to South Florida as a young child and attended Gesu High School. She met her husband, Ronald Sopczak, while he was stationed in Miami as a member of the Air Force. They married on April 11, 1953. After raising their children in Hialeah, Florida, Ronald and Charlene retired to Clayton, NC.
Charlene loved children and was instrumental in raising seven of her own and several grandchildren. She loved the holidays and we, her adult children, now appreciate how exciting and special she made each Christmas for all of us on a tight budget. We fondly remember special holiday gatherings and Easter egg hunts (but not the curlers we slept with in preparation for Easter mass). We thank you, Mom, for all your hard work and for the wonderful memories you made for us.
Charlene is preceded in death by her husband Ronald, her son Steven, and her first-born son. She is survived by her sister, Phyllis Lott, her children Lorraine (Billy) Jackson, Donna (Don) Turner, Julie (Ray) Romine, Annette (Jose) Rivera, Janet (Roger) McCarthy, and David Sopczak. Her grandchildren are Krista (Chris) Adach, Michael and Jason Turner, Kevin and Adam Sopczak, Tiffany (Jorge) Sopczak, Lauren (Rocky) McCarthy-Lewis, and David (Olivia) Sopczak. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Alexandra Turner and Connor Adach.
A family graveside service is planned for Saturday, April 13th. Memorial contributions can be sent to the Dementia Alliance of NC.
