Mrs. Doloris Boyd Stephenson Curl, 88, died Thursday, July 3, 2025. She was born on August 22, 1936 in Johnston County to the late John Henry and Rita Grimes Boyd. She was a 1954 graduate of Four Oaks High School and later completed a business/stenography course at Hardbarger Business College in Raleigh. Outside of the home, she worked at several different places including Goodmark Foods, Great American Insurance and K Mart before completing her career at the N.C. Dept. of Transportation, retiring in 1990 from the Planning & Research section. After retirement, she worked periodically at the Chatham County Board of Elections.
She was married in 1954 to Grady O. Stephenson, Sr., who passed away in 1978, she later married David L. Curl of Pittsboro in 1990 and lived WAY out in the country between Pittsboro and Graham, NC until his death in 2010. She LOVED to host and entertain the numerous friends and relatives who journeyed to Pittsboro from Eastern N.C. While living in Pittsboro, she was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Upon her return to Garner, she became a member of Vandora Springs Free Will Baptist Church and the Rand-Bryan Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Chapter.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her daughter Sharon in 2017, grandson Blake Carroll in 1997, and sisters Betty Ellis, Carolyn Adams, Diane Adams and Margaret Boyd.
In addition, and we cannot leave out remembrance of her maternal grandparents, W.O. and Fannie B. Grimes of Benson. Growing up, she was very close to them and, in recent years, reminisced about them almost on a daily basis. Mama told us that when she died, we had better mention them.
Survivors include her daughter, Susan S. Carroll and husband Ricky, of Raleigh and her son, Grady Stephenson, Jr, of Garner. Two granddaughters, Jessica C. Clinton and husband Brad of Willow Spring and Jenna C. Hogsed and husband Garrin of Murphy, N.C. Great-grandchildren (who she dearly loved) are Blakely, Kendall and Jace Clinton; step great-grandchildren, Ralston and Hadley Hogsed. She is also survived by a brother, David W. Boyd of Laurinburg, NC, and several nieces and nephews. Several cousins, many friends and loved ones in the Stephenson, Byrd and Langdon families.
We want to thank all the friends and relatives who have called, visited, brought food and prayed for us as we begin our journey through life without Mama. We are blessed beyond measure for many things, primarily to have had her for almost 89 years and the ability to live at home independently. Although we could NEVER keep the house as clean as SHE could, bake a carrot cake as well as SHE could, keep the car as clean/shiny as SHE could, cut grass to meet HER standards, she STILL loved us and overlooked our many flaws!
Funeral services will be held at McLaurin Funeral Home in Clayton on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, with visitation from 11:00 to 12:30 and funeral service at 1:00. Burial will follow at the Fellowship Community Cemetery, Old Fairground Rd., Angier (McGee’s Crossroads).
While flowers are accepted, memorial contributions may also be made to Samaritan’s Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607 or to the Fellowship Community Cemetery Association, 46 Denning Rd. Benson, NC 27504.
