Marie was a seamstress at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh, NC, making mattress and pillow covers. She and her husband, Lonnie, owned and operated Spears Piano Company in Raleigh. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing and refurbishing furniture and playing with her house plants. She talked with her plants as if they were people. She loved to spend time with her family, laughing and sharing stories of the past.
Marie is preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Junior Spears; niece Dawn Marie Mackland. She is survived by her sons, James (Joan Stowe) Hoover of Troutman; Michael (Lori Eastman) Spears of Garner; Roger (Liese Smitherman) of Clayton; Bryan (Betty Carr) Spears of Apex; Kevin Spears (Debbie Walker) of Zebulon; her sister Genevieve Mackland, nephews Darryl and David Mackland of Florida.
She has eleven grandchildren, Stephen (Noelle Dallanske) Hoover of Rolesville; Jessica Spears (Matthew) Partin of Willow Springs; Michael (Kristin Askew) Spears of Garner; Tanya Spears (Nick) Pearce of Smithfield; Tommy (Carla Slominski) Spears of Midland, Michigan; Joseph (Emily Rogers) of Benson; Adam Spears, Kristy Spears of Linden; Alex Spears, Luke Spears of Clayton; Nathaniel Spears of Apex. North Carolina. Additionally Mrs. Spears has ten great grandchildren, Kailyn and Aubrie Hoover; Danica, Zachary and Elliott Partin; Chloe Pearce; Gavin and Maggie Spears; Declan Spears; and Weslyn and Jaxton Spears.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2022 at 2:00pm in the chapel Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum with the interment following at Raleigh Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 from 6:00 - 8:00pm at McLaurin Funeral Home in Clayton.
