CLAYTON - Herbert Charles Green passed away at his home in Clayton, NC on April 10, 2021 after a brief battle with cancer. His loving wife Christina Cintorino Green was by his side.
Herb was born in Brooklyn on June 4, 1947, the son of Herbert and Anne (Clouter) Green, who both predeceased him. He spent the first 24 years of his life growing up in Park Slope, New York. In 1974 he married Christina and for the first few years of their married life they lived in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. In 1979 they bought their first home in Sloatsburg, NY where they lived until they retired and moved to Clayton the summer of 2010.
Herb graduated from John Jay High School in 1965 and obtained his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Brooklyn College in 1969. To put himself through college he worked nights at the Associated Press. After graduation he worked in the information technology field. He was a programmer and analyst for the New York City Health and Hospitals Corp., a Park Avenue actuarial firm, and a New Jersey finance and marketing firm. He was also the manager of Information Technology and the East Coast EDI specialist for the A&P Corporation.
Whether camping, fishing, hunting, or gardening, Herb was in his element when he was outdoors. He had a vast knowledge of all these activities and was happiest when he could share his excitement for and knowledge of them with his friends and family. An avid backpacker, he was even featured on the cover of the first issue of Backpacker magazine, taking a break from his hike to gaze out over the Ramapo Mountains.
Herb was an avid reader who would devour books on just about any subject. History, nature, guns and cars were among his favorite topics. And whatever he read, he retained. If you had a question about practically any subject, Herb usually had the answer. If he didn’t have the answer, the next time you saw him he did!
In addition to his parents, Herb was also predeceased by his sister Arlene Green Wilson and her husband Richard Wilson. Along with Christina, his best friend and devoted wife of 47 years, he is survived by three nephews and a niece, three grand nephews, two grand nieces, and six great grand nieces and nephews.
A compassionate, loving, generous and kind individual who touched the lives of so many people, Herb will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
