He was born in Selma on September 7, 1939 to Charles and Daisy Ruth Hughes.
Jimmy bravely served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He retired from Atlanta Gas Light in 1995 after 35 years of service.
Survivors include sons Layton W. Hughes of Indian Rocks Beach, Fl. and Scott E. Stevens of South Pasadena, FL.; sister Joyce E. Smythe of Corapeale, NC; and grandsons Erik Hughes, Michael Hughes and Devin Comeau all of Virginia Beach, VA.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at McLaurin Funeral Home 12830 US 70 Bus. Hwy. W., Clayton, NC 27520 on September 5, 2017 at 11am with Reverend Sylvia Rackley presiding.
