Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, Joan was the beloved daughter of Charles and Annie Pearl Cooke. She grew up with her cherished twin sister, Jean Cooke, and brother, Bill Cooke, who preceded her in death.
Joan attended Peace College, where she studied voice and shared her remarkable musical gifts with all who knew her. She was a longtime member of Hayes Barton Baptist Church, where her beautiful solos filled the sanctuary with her angelic voice. Equally talented on the piano, Joan taught countless students to play, inspiring a love of music that will live on for generations.
Married for nearly 50 years to the love of her life, the late Allen Basala, Joan built a warm and joyful home in Cary, where they raised their two daughters, Angie Moore and Allison Prescott.
Joan was the life of every gathering—known for her quick wit, infectious laugh, love of hats, and zest for music and fun. She had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and loved. Her home was filled with laughter, music, and the fragrance of her stunning gardens—her yard was known as one of the most beautiful in the neighborhood.
Of all her many accomplishments, Joan’s greatest joy and title in life were Mom and Grammy. She leaves behind her daughters, Angie Moore and husband Kevin, and Allison Prescott and husband Derick; grandchildren Keller, Jakin, Nia, and Levy Moore; and Christian, Kylie (and husband Justin), and Haven Prescott. She was also blessed with precious great-granddaughters, twins Hattie and Harper, who brought her endless delight.
Her favorite song, “Amen,” perfectly reflected the faith and joy that guided her life. Joan’s voice, laughter, and love will echo forever in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know her.
