John was born on April 28, 1932, in New York City—arriving in memorable fashion in a taxicab on the way to the hospital. He grew up in the Bronx and was the son of Michael and Emma Baumler, who immigrated to the United States from Germany in the early 1900s.
John proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a member of the Seabees. After his military service, he spent 40 years working for Consolidated Edison (Con Edison) in New York before retiring.
Following his retirement, John made Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, his home. In 1995, he married Elizabeth at a church ceremony in Hilton Head, and together they shared a loving marriage filled with faith, family, travel, and cherished memories.
John enjoyed an active lifestyle well into his eighties. He loved golfing as a member of Dolphin Head Golf Club, boating, fishing, traveling, watching soccer, and spending time working in his garage. He collected authentic cuckoo clocks, spoke a little German, and was always ready to enjoy a slice of lemon pie or his nightly bowl of ice cream. Family and friends will fondly remember him singing the “Ooey Gooey” song and affectionately calling him “Johnny Charm.”
John faithfully served at Saint Andrew By-the-Sea Church in Hilton Head Island, where he was a member of the Board of Trustees and volunteered his time maintaining the church grounds and facilities. Each year he handcrafted wooden toys for the church’s Fall Festival to help raise funds for its ministries. During the last two years of his life, John and Elizabeth moved to Clayton, North Carolina, to be closer to family. They both recently became a member of Powhatan Original Free Will Baptist Church.
John’s greatest joy was his family. He never missed an opportunity to tell others how much he loved them and how proud he was of each one.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Elizabeth Baumler; stepdaughters Pam and her husband, Chris, and Lisa and her husband, Jon; grandchildren Kristin Radford, Scott Kepley and his wife, Ashley, and Lara Mitchell; great-grandchildren Easton and Everleigh Kepley; along with extended family and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Emma Baumler, and his brother, Richard Baumler.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at McLaurin Funeral Home in Clayton, North Carolina. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Powhatan Original Free Will Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1955, Clayton, NC 27528.
John will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his servant’s heart, his gentle spirit, and his devotion to his family. His legacy of love, kindness, and integrity will continue to live on in all who were blessed to know him.
