John began his career at IBM at the age of 18, embarking on a journey that spanned decades until his retirement in 1992. Retirement, however, was just a suggestion—he went on to work with CDI Corporation for another seven years before finally deciding to slow down.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Bida was a die-hard Notre Dame fan—so much so that he crossed “attend a game in South Bend” off his bucket list not once, but twice, and even made it to the National Championship in Miami in 2013. Although the Irish didn’t win that day, for Bida, it still ranked among his top ten life experiences. He also cheered on the LA Dodgers and the Indianapolis Colts.
Travel was another of John’s great joys. He fulfilled lifelong dreams by journeying to Ireland with Lou and friends and by cruising Alaska.
Above all, he was deeply devoted to his family, rarely missing an opportunity to support his children and grandchildren at their events, always encouraging them with pride.
He is preceded in death by cherished members of the McHale and Novak families.
Bida is survived by his beloved wife, Louise “Lovely Lou” Novak McHale of Clayton, NC, who affectionately called him “Rowdy John.” He is also survived by his four children—Ed McHale of Knightdale, NC; Ann McHale Nyberg (John) of Beaufort, NC; Kathleen McHale Jobson (Chris) of Huntersville, NC; and Terie McHale of Boca Raton, FL. His legacy continues through his treasured grandchildren: Ryan Nyberg, Paige Nyberg Piner (Jonathan), Meghan Nyberg Roark (Ryan), Collin Ellington, and Travis Ellington, as well as three great-grandchildren who recently brought him immense joy—Josie and Ellie Roark, and Emma Piner.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate John’s life at a visitation on Sunday, June 21, 2026, from 3:00–5:00 pm at McLaurin Funeral Home, 12830 Clayton Boulevard, Clayton, NC. A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2718 Overbrook Drive, Raleigh, NC, on Monday, June 22, 2026, at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in John’s honor to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church or the American Diabetes Association P.O. Box 15829 Arlington, VA 22215.
Bida leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and loyalty—qualities that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. As he would say, “Go Irish!”
