Unfortunately, we will have to postpone my brother John’s service until a later date. The entire family has contracted COVID.
My apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused. However we would never risk anyone’s health by exposing them to COVID.
I promise to post the new arrangements once we get through this setback. Right now, it looks like it will be in early January due to the holidays.
Some things are just out of our control. But again, my apologies.
Please keep John’s beautiful soul in your thoughts and prayers.
With great sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved, John D. Schoonmaker, on December 1, 2022. We are heartbroken by his passing, but thankful for his life and the time we had together.
John was born on October 9,1965 at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California to Sarah V. Schoonmaker and the late Marc P. Schoonmaker. He was preceded in death by his older sister, Jane K. Schoonmaker. He is survived by his younger sister Elizabeth K. Tyndall and her husband David, with whom John was very close, his nephew Andrew Kyle and wife Deisy, his great-niece Ariyanna G. Kyle, and great-nephew Damien A. Kyle.
John had two daughters that he adored and were the center of his world, Ariel Jane Schoonmaker and Piper Elizabeth Schoonmaker. John treasured his children and embraced every moment with them. He wants them to always remember he loved them without limits.
John graduated from New Hanover High School in 1984. John served in the United States Air Force as a Security Police Officer where he made many lifelong friends. John continued his education after he came out of the military and graduated from Wake Forest University in 2000 with his Physician’s Assistant Degree. John loved working in the medical field and helping others. He worked at the VA for many years helping his military brothers and sisters.
John’s lifelong love was music. He was a self-taught musical genius when it came to guitar, bass guitar, and keyboards. John was able to spend hours playing and listening to his favorites like Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Soundgarden. John often spoke of the Brew Crew days and the profound love he had for his friends.
