

John Vanderboom was born May 7th, 1940 in Mitchell SD to Govert and Johanna Vanderboom. He graduated from Platte High School in 1958 and then went on to college at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX where he received his BS in Business Administration. He proudly served his country in the US Army as a sergeant in the army intelligence division. During his years of service, he was stationed in Japan where he also received his black belt in judo.
He met the love of his life, Loma Dawn Postma, in South Dakota shortly after returning stateside from Japan. They were married on February 23rd, 1967 and started their journey together as they moved to several small towns in South Dakota for John’s career in the banking business. Being a lover of the great outdoors and wanting to explore the last frontier, he left his position at National Bank of South Dakota in 1984 and moved his family to Juneau, Alaska. There he served as vice president of Behrend’s Bank for many years before he decided to branch out into real estate and finally finished his career as owner of Tabs Unlimited which distributed pull-tabs to the communities in southeast Alaska.
In 2000, Dallas, TX became their home in semi-retirement and in 2018 moved to North Carolina to be near family. John was a loving family man whose greater family, wife, children and grandchildren along with his deep faith and love for the Lord were most important to him. He will be remembered for his laugh, jokes, and always befriending a stranger.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Gene. His passing will be mourned by his dear wife, Dawn, daughters Heather (JR), Lyria (Jonathan), grandchildren Lindsay, John, Jesse, Jacob, Gideon, Levi, great granddaughter Lillian and great grandson Brody, brother and sister-in-law Nyla and Tom Throckmorton and family, niece Jane, nephews Paul and GJ along with many friends.
Cremation was held in accordance with John’s wishes. A celebration of John’s life will be celebrated on Thursday, December 2nd at 3:00pm EST at The Passage Church (4419 S. Smithfield Rd, Knightdale, NC 27545) where John and Dawn were members since moving to NC. A livestream recording will also be available for those friends and family who are unable to attend.
