Lewis Ray Gower

Lewis Ray Gower, of Clayton, NC passed away very peacefully on Sunday, September 26, 2021 with his daughters by his side following a sudden illness.

He was born on February 24, 1941 to the late Graham Gower and Edna Johnson Gower.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sweetheart of 38 years, Barbara Ann Smith.

Lewis was a friend to many, especially all of his golf buddies that he played with throughout the years. He was voted a Senior Favorite and Friendliest in the Clayton High School Class of 59 Yearbook. He enjoyed two careers during his work life, first as an automobile mechanic, and then as a pressman at The News & Observer. Lewis and Barbara enjoyed trips to Atlantic City for a weekend of slot machines and Blackjack. Lewis loved his mama fiercely, and would call her up to five times a day to keep her company when he was not with her. His daughters are most proud to say, “To know daddy was to love him (and to laugh)”. As friends and family continue to share their “Lewis Stories” (because everyone has one), the laughter will continue his legacy, and isn’t laughter the best medicine?

Surviving are his daughters, Cynthia (Cindy) Gower Maciejewski and husband, Joe Maciejewski of Morrisville, NC and two grandsons, Joshua (Josh) Graham Maciejewski and Jacob Anthony Maciejewski; daughter, Misty Rae Gower Parnell and husband, Robert Parnell of Nags Head, NC; ex-spouse and mother of his daughters, Nina Green; brother Edgar “Jennings” Gower of Clayton, NC and two nephews, Eddy Gower and Gregory (Greg) Gower; and his beloved cousins, Tommy Gower, Ronnie Gower, and Susie Gower Bunn. He is also survived by Barbara’s children, Cheryl Upchurch, Neal Smith, and Wendy Masters and their families.

A Graveside Service is being held on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at 11:00 am at Maplewood Cemetery, 504 South Smith Street, Clayton, NC. The family will receive friends at the family home, 217 Hardee Street, Clayton, NC this Sunday, October 3, 2021 from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm.
