Bill Tharrington (93) passed away peacefully in his home Tuesday November 17, 2020 surrounded by son and a family friend. He is now with his Heavenly Father, and reunited with his Wife, and family, and friends that have gone on before him.
Bill was born in Inez, NC in Warren County on March 14, 1927 to Benjamin Green Tharrington and Anna Williams Tharrington. He is Survived by his daughter Ann Gurganus and Husband Todd of Smithfield; sons M. W. Tharrington Jr. (Frog) and wife Teresa of Garner, Charles Tharrington and his companion Cathy Young of Garner; grandchildren, Kevin Tharrington, Jason Tharrington and wife Leslie, Scott Tharrington and wife Natalie, Taylor Gurganus, and 4 great grandchildren; Sister, Bennie Tharrington Wagner of Lexington. He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years Lucy Mae Tharrington; parents many brother and sisters.
Bill joined the Army and served in World War II as well as the Korean War. In the later part of the 50’s he would meet the love of his Life Lucy Mae Watkins while she was delivering a bag of coal with her father on Martin Street in Raleigh, NC. He was a welder by trade and worked at the Newport News, Virginia shipyard and later welding steam lines for various companies in Raleigh, NC such as Watco in the “40’s & 50’s. He would weld trailers and pig cookers to sale at his shop on Jones Sausage Road in Garner until his retirement at 80 years of age. Bill had an avid passion for crappie fishing at Sharon Harris Lake and at Newport News, Virginia. He was known to have wandering spirit; He would disappear for days or weeks at a time driving across the United States. Sometimes he would take his grandchild with him on his journeys as a side kick making unforgettable memories. He was a fierce poker player known to play for a week at a time nonstop as the game allowed. He looked forward to Sunday afternoon poker games with his son Charles until covid19 would prevent the players from gathering. He was loved by his family and friends and will forever be remembered.
Funeral Service will be held at 10 am on Wednesday November 25, 2020 at the chapel of McLaurin funeral Home with Rev Bryan Crumpler of Hayes Chapel Christian Church in Garner, NC officiating, committal service will follow at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens in Raleigh. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the V.F.W, 1706 West Garner Road, Garner, NC 27529.
