

Mary Cooper Sauls, 73 Passed away Wednesday July 12. 2017. A retired school teacher, Mary was the kind of person that considered herself lucky to have loved her job as a classroom teacher and the first graders that she taught for 38 years.
She was lifetime member of the First Baptist Church and a member of the Chancel Choir for over fifty years. Mrs. Sauls was a charter member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, member and past-president of Halcyon Book Club, president of the Johnston County Arts Council, director of Miss Johnston County Pageants, chairman of Clayton Christmas Parade, chairman of the Soybean Festival, and judge for the preliminary Miss North Carolina Pageant.
She has received many awards including the Delta Kappa Gamma Membership Award for 41 years of service; Clayton Chamber of Commerce Special Volunteer Award, Clayton Citizen of the Year, Clayton Primary Teacher of the Year in 1982; First Humanistic Award at Clayton Primary; Enthusiasm and Effort for Excellence in Education Award in 2000, and Who’s Who Among America’s Teacher in 2006.
She is survived by her daughter; Elizabeth Cooper Stratton, a son; Lawrence Sauls and his wife Laura, sister; Elizabeth McLaurin, grandchildren; PFC Austin Sauls and his wife Kennedy, Dylan Evans, a great-granddaughter; Leighton Mary Sauls.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening, July 14, 2017 from 6 until 8:00pm at McLaurin Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday July 15, 2017 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Mark White officiating. Interment will follow at Maplewood Cemetery.
