Nancy Marie (Mae) Berry, daughter of the late Lucille Higgins was born in Savannah, Georgia on September 19, 1934. She peacefully fell asleep in death after a brief illness on August 16, 2016 at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina. Nancy was educated in the Savannah school system and shortly after graduating high school, relocated to the Harlem, New York area where she met one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. After several discussions along with reading the Bible, she became interested in serving Jehovah and becoming one of Jehovah’s Witnesses herself. New York was also the place where she met and married the one and only love of her life, William Berry in 1959. Because of her deep love for Bible truth and having become one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, she (with the consent of her “husband-to-be”) was married by a local elder, Brother Theodore Jaracz who resided at Watchtower Headquarters (known as “Bethel” at 124 Columbia Heights in Brooklyn, NY). Sister Berry was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1958 and was a faithful servant of Jehovah for over 50 years…never wavering in her desire to please her Heavenly Father, Jehovah, and doing His will in spite of imperfection and weaknesses. Many of her fondest memories were the times she spent in the ministry, helping others to learn about Jehovah and develop a close, personal relationship with their Creator. She also loved talking with others about the Bible’s wonderful hope for the future. Nancy will be remembered as a kind, friendly, generous and loving person who drew people to her. She will also be remembered for her culinary skills…an excellent cook who rarely dined out because of her love for preparing home cooked meals (although she did enjoy dining out from time-to-time). Nancy was a well-dressed lady who loved traveling and entertaining friends, although her ability to do so waned with advancing age. Younger ones in the congregation especially enjoyed her company as she theirs. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband William Berry and eldest son, Mark Berry, along with her close and constant “canine” companion, Jaguar. She is survived by and leaves to cherish her memory…her son, Steven Jay Berry (Judi/wife); a foster son, Bernard Wiggins of Atlanta, GA (and his family); one grandson, Kavon Berry; two granddaughters Baniyha Berry of Uniondale, NY and Kyha Berry of Kissimmee, FL along with two great-granddaughters, Sa’Kia (NY) and Kamyha’ (FL); two sisters-in-law, Barbara Berry of Queens, NY and Jean Berry of Augusta, GA. She also leaves to cherish her memory a host of other relatives and close/dear friends who will miss her immensely. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1913 Trawick Road, Raleigh, NC 27604. There will be a call-in number for friends and family unable to attend in person. Please contact Steven or Judi @919-744-0246 or 919-744-1750 to obtain this information.
