Born in Austin, Minnesota, on February 19, 1934, Ronald lived a long, full life defined by his dedication to his country, his mind, and love of his family. A proud veteran, he served in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1956. Following his military service, Ronald worked as an auto mechanic before embarking on a long, dedicated career with the United States Postal Service in Minnesota. Upon his retirement, he moved to Tennessee, and later spent 12 meaningful years as a resident of Clayton, North Carolina, where he built wonderful memories.
An analytical thinker with a sharp mind, Ronald loved reading the newspaper and passionately engaged with the world around him by commenting on editorials. He appreciated profound wisdom and kept a handwritten quote by theologian Reinhold Niebuhr that spoke to his worldview: ‘There is serious evil in the world and hardship and pain. We should be humble and modest in our belief we can eliminate those things.’ His humility and willingness to listen to others will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was kind and non-judgmental toward all that asked to be heard.
In one note to his children, he wrote ‘so keep smiling and carry on. Was indeed blessed to have you all as my family’.
Ronald was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pat, who passed away from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Ronald was a loving husband, who cared for her at his home for five years until her death.
He is survived by his beloved children, Cydnee Baffa (Ernie), Jeff Oehler, Kevin Oehler (Judy), five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Ronald will be cremated under the care of McLaurin Funeral Home in Clayton, North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ronald's honor to organizations like When We All Vote
