Stephen was born in Clinton, NC on February 7, 1949, to Joyce Perry Kornegay and the late Marshall R. Kornegay.
In addition to his mother, Stephen is also survived by sons, Allen McCray and his wife, Maggie, and Jack Mccray; granddaughter, Katie McCray; brother, Marshall Robert Kornegay, Jr.; sisters, Elaine Kornegay and Dale Moore; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father, Stephen is also preceded in death by his son, Frank Cates; wife, Ginger Kornegay; brother, Mark Kornegay; nephew, Brandon Kornegay; brothers-in-law, Roy Moore, and Greg Kornegay.
A funeral service celebrating Stephen’s life will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2025 at 3:00pm in the chapel of McLaurin Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 2:00 until 3:00pm at the funeral home. The entombment will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park Mausoleum.
