GARNER – Steven Douglas Atwood, age 66, passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2020 at Duke University Hospital surrounded by his wife and sisters.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, December 31, 2020 in the chapel of McLaurin Funeral Home with Reverend Troy Lee Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park.
Steve was born May 3, 1954 in Johnston County to the late Douglas Atwood and Virginia Jones Atwood. He was a 1972 graduate of Garner Senior High School and an active member of Garner Country Club. Steve was the owner of Atwood Towing and the former owner of Atwood Tire. He enjoyed being a part of the breakfast clubs of Angie’s Restaurant, Jones’s Cafe, and Big Ed’s, with his buddies. Wednesday evenings were spent with friends at the Club House Restaurant. He was a devoted family man, and found pleasure organizing family reunions, cousin trips and taking road trips with his sisters.
Steve is survived by his wife; Debbie Stancil; daughter, Amanda Banks, (Jason); two grandsons, Tucker and Jaxson, who were the love of his life; sisters, Brenda Atwood Hill (Charles), Judy Atwood Pounds (Ronald), Sheila Atwood Elliott (Steve) and Toni Atwood Shaw (Tony); and nephews, Craig Pounds (Jennifer), Stephen Jernigan (Paige), Eric Pounds (Cynthia) Andrew Shaw (Ashley), Mitchell Shaw and Patrick Shaw. Numerous great-nephews and great-nieces. Sister-in-law, Linda Stancil; and Brother-in-law, Sammy Stancil.
His body will lie-in-state at the funeral home from 12 noon until 2:00 PM Thursday prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
