Werner Anton Fick, age 82, of Clayton, North Carolina passed away on Friday, March 10, 2023 after a brief illness. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Ursula Polley Fick and his sons, Kenneth (Dorene) Fick and Ralph (Debbie) Fick and seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, as well as his eldest brother, Rudolf Fick. He is predeceased by his other brother, Walter Fick.
Werner was born in Westerwanna, Germany to Alfred and Erna Fick. He emigrated to New York in 1959 and later sponsored his then fiancee, Ursula, to join him. They married October 6, 1962 and learned the delicatessen trade. They purchased their first deli in Queens, NY in 1967 which was successful until they sold it a decade later. As active members of the Otterndorfer-Buelkauer Club, Werner and Ursula were able to share their northern German heritage with their sons. Over the years, Werner returned to Germany several times with his family as well as traveling around the United States of which he became a proud citizen.
Werner moved the family to the lower Hudson Valley, NY and opened a new delicatessen. As members of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Werner and Ursula shared their talents with the congregation and community, catering many of the events held at the church and serving as usher and elder. After another decade of running a successful deli, Werner sold the business and "went to work part-time, only 40 hours a week" as a courier for Goshen School District.
After retiring, Werner and Ursula moved to Monroe, NC in 2006. They resettled in Clayton, NC in 2019.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 18 at 11am at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 2920 NC-42, Clayton, North Carolina 27520.
