William Ray Barbour, born November 12, 1936, in Johnston County to the late Judson and Pauline Howell Barbour, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on April 9, 2025, at the age of 88. Ray lived a full and meaningful life, marked by his generous spirit, and deep love for family and friends. After 53 years of service, Ray retired as a supervisor with Tops Petroleum under the ownership of Mr. Frank Kenan. He was a lifelong member of Garner Church of God where he served on the church council. Ray loved the LORD. He loved sharing the gospel and could pray a sermon! When he said he would pray for someone, he didn’t wait, he prayed immediately with them, no matter where they might be. He was even known to pray for friends walking down the street in front of his house! When asked how he was doing, he would always answer with a hearty “I’m Blessed!”
Ray also loved coaching. He coached the first team to ever win a state championship in Garner - the 1974 Junior League All Star Baseball Team.
He is survived by his two daughters, Shelia B. Hamilton and husband, Steve, and Lisa Barbour; his son, Danny “Moe” Barbour and wife Maria; brother, Roger J. Barbour; sister, Vera B. Barbour; grandchildren, Dustin Hamilton, Meredith Hamilton, Lauren Tilghman, Morgan Jones, Shea Barbour and Tanner Barbour and six precious great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Betsy Lee Barbour; brothers, Leon B. Barbour and Charles C. Barbour.
A very special and heart-felt thank you to the best caregivers ever – Ms. Angie Jones, brother Roger Barbour and special friend of 11 years, Brenda Kissam. The family would also like to thank Danah, Brandi, Eddie, Jennifer, Jackie and Rick with Hospice – Medi Home Health Agency. Your quick and comforting responses blessed us these last two weeks.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, April 11, 2025, at Garner Church of God with Pastor J. Dan Hudson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 10:00am. The entombment will follow the services at Pinecrest Memorial Park Mausoleum in Clayton.
Ray and his late wife Besty loved the Church of God Children’s Home and became faithful donors. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Barbour would be honored to continue the spirit of giving by having memorial contributions made in his name to the Church of God Children’s Home, 3485 Weatherby Cir. Concord, NC 28027.
