

Born August 22, 1940 in Grampian, the son of William T. and Margaret M. (Bell) Sunderland.
He was a graduate of Curwensville Area High School and DuBois Business College.
Early in life Clair had worked for Clearfield Cheese. On September 3, 1964 he began his career in law enforcement serving as a Pennsylvania State Trooper for 26 years retiring on September 28, 1990.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved playing, coaching and watching baseball. Above all he was a family man and treasured spending time with his loved ones.
Clair is survived by his wife, Judith E. (Hanley) Sunderland whom he married November 10, 1962; two sons, Robert L. Sunderland and his wife Ann of Louisville, KY and Michael R. Sunderland and his wife Hillary of State College; eight grandchildren, Nicole, Kaitlin, Ryan, Emily, Matthew, Luke, Isaac and Elianne; nine great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Kimberly and a sister-in-law, Kathryn “Puzzy” Sunderland.
He was the last member of his generation having been preceded in death by his parents; a son, Mark A. Sunderland; seven brothers, Alton, Jim, Charles, Bud, Dick, Boyd and Ted Sunderland and a sister, Grace Meckley.
Funeral Services will be held at the Bennett and Houser Funeral Home, Inc. of Clearfield on Monday, June 2, 2025 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Stephen D. Shields officiating. Interment will be in Friends Cemetery, Grampian.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday from 10:00 AM until the hour of services.
