Janet L. Nelson

Janet was born on November 28, 1933, the daughter of the late A. Lee Sunderland and Flora (Williams) Sunderland.

Janet was a life long member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Clearfield, serving in various capacities including Sunday School Teacher, singing in the choir, outreach to neighborhood children, operating the church thrift store, and cleaning the Spirit Hall.

During her working life, Janet worked at several secretarial jobs. She also owned and operated Nelson Ceramics, teaching ceramic classes and selling ceramic items at various craft shows.

Janet enjoyed gardening and golfing in the couples’ golf league.

She is survived by a son, Kim A. Nelson and wife Deborah; a son-in-law, Rev. Douglas Rhone; grandchildren, Andrew Nelson and wife Ashley, Matthew Nelson, Zachary Rhone and wife Maria, and Caitlin Colesar and husband Nick; and 12 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Sherman L. Nelson; a daughter, Rev. Karen L. Rhone; and a grandson, Rev. Joshua Rhone; brothers, Emory ‘Bill’ Sunderland, Raymond Sunderland, Horace Sunderland, Merle Sunderland; and a sister, Annabelle Pritts.

Funeral Services will be held at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church on Thursday, September 3, 2026 at 11 AM with Rev. Matthew Loyer officiating. Burial will be in the Historic Crown Crest Cemetery, Hyde.

Visitation will be held at the Bennett and Houser Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 from 6-8 PM and at the church on Thursday September 3, 2026 from 10-11 AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 1010 Dorey Street, Clearfield, PA 16830.
