Alicia was born of the late Nicholas and Katherine (Kitty) (nee Handgis) on February 14, 1937. She graduated from Ambridge High School where she was an active student including being a cheerleader for the annual Yale-Princeton game throughout her high school career. She graduated in 1954 at which time she was also completing her studies at Mason Felix Cosmetology School in Pittsburgh, PA. Dance was Alicia’s passion. She was accepted as a Rockette by Radio City Music Hall in New York City. She was also featured as a “Calendar Girl” in the Doris Singer Studio production, “Happy Holidays”.
During their courtship, Alicia and John were known as the jitterbug King and Queen. She married John Treantafellow in August 1958 and they made their home in Chicago, IL until John’s active-duty tour was completed with the United States Navy. They continued to dance through life and eventually purchased a home in Baden, PA where they would begin their family. After raising their two children, they permanently relocated to Clearwater, Florida in 1995 to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Alicia was a member of the Eastern Star in Ambridge, PA and an active member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Ambridge, PA where she served in many capacities. She led the Hellenic Dance Group, was a GOYA Advisor, PTO President, Philoptichos board officer, Daughters of Penelope and served as a chair and co-chair for many of the church committees including giving much of her time and talent to our beloved “Nationality Days'' preparing the Hellenic Dancers for performance, baking baklava, making pastichio, rolling stuffed grape leaves (dolmathes), and ultimately standing for hours in the Greek Parthenon Booth serving the Greek delicacies to all who came.
Mom invented “take your kid to work day” long before it was recognized. Her children were raised in bassinets in her Beauty Salon where she could work and be a mom at the same time. She and John had a goal in life and that was to ultimately teach their children the priority of the complete circle of the Eastern Orthodox Church; Liturgia (worship), Diakonia (service), Martyria (witness), and Koinonia (fellowship). Alicia ensured that her children and godchildren were in church every Sunday and major feast days and did not believe in the C&E Christian. She signed her children up to serve in any capacity that was needed, to witness by sharing faith with others, and to cook and bake up a storm for Koionia or fellowship with others, especially on St. John’s Feast Day when their home would be visited by hundreds.
Alicia went a second round by passing down all these teachings to her grandchildren which were her pride and joy, and her granddaughters are mastered Greek pastry bakers, especially baklava, and her grandson serves many delicious meals.
We have been truly blessed with the gifts our mother passed down to us; customs, traditions, and a moral compass. Her unconditional love was known to all as her door was always open and a meal always on the table for those who visited, and for all the “strays” her daughter would bring home (sometimes 15 at a time from college or summer church camp). Mom always took this time as an opportunity to share a plethora of information regarding the complete circle of the Orthodox Church.
Alicia is preceded in death by her husband John of almost 50 years, her parents, Nicholas and Katherine Kalabokes, and a niece, Pandora Peronis-Dinello. She is survived by her daughter Kathilynn Treantafellow-Liadis and son-in-love, Michael of Clearwater, FL whom Alicia resided with, a son, Nicholas Treantafellow of Clearwater, FL, three grandchildren; Alyssa Liadis-Gortner (Kyle) of Pinellas Park, FL; Yianni Liadis of Clearwater, FL, and Demi Liadis of Largo, FL. One sister, Christine Kalabokes Peronis (Lou) of Conway, PA, five godchildren, Cindy Lucas Lolly of Tampa, FL, Gregory Skoofalos of Mercer, PA, Denise Karagianis of Sarasota, FL, and twins Christine Guccione-Collins, and Alex Guccione both of Tampa, FL, a Godbrother, Dean Popps of McLean, VA, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and their families as well as the friends that John & Alicia chose to be “family”.
Visitation will be received Wednesday, Feb 16 from 5 pm – 9 pm at Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home 2853 Sunset Point Road, Clearwater, FL 33759 where a trisagion service will take place at 7 pm. Lastly, we want to give special thanks to the Empath Health Hospice Bronze team for their compassionate care and their support during this short journey, especially Jennifer, who had the patience of a saint.
