

August Arthur (Bud) Mitchell, 98 of New Port Richey, Florida, passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Orchard Ridge Nursing Home in New Port Richey. Bud was born in Staten Island, New York on May 12, 1918 to Augusta and Samuel Mitchell. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Dorothy Wohlschlegel Mitchell. After High School and a successful career as a semi-pro football player, he joined the Army in September 1941 and was assigned to train with General Patton’s Armored Division where he was when Pearl Harbor was attacked that December. He remained with Patton as a tank commander through the North African Campaign and the liberation of Italy. He spent 37 months at the front and was in Trieste on VE day. He was awarded both a Bronze and Silver Star for heroism during the Italian campaign and was discharged from the Army in July 1945. After the war he joined Gibson Greeting Cards as a regional salesman in New York City and later Virginia and Pennsylvania. He lived in Allentown, Pennsylvania for many years before relocating to Florida in the 1970s. Bud was a 50-year member of the Masonic Chapter in Allentown, Pennsylvania and was a member of the Egypt Shrine in Tampa. Funeral will be 11am Tuesday Feb 14th at Spirit of Grace Lutheran Church, 9525 Hudson Avenue, Hudson, Florida 34667. Visitation will be 10-11AM at the Church. Lunch will be served after the funeral. Burial will be at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida at 2:30PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Spirit of Grace Lutheran Church. www.sylvanabbey.com
